Crohn’s disease is an autoimmune condition that affects the digestive tract. In Crohn’s disease, the body
overproduces a substance known as TNF-alpha. TNF-alpha attaches to cells in the intestinal tract
triggering the body’s immune system to attack healthy, normal tissue. This “autoimmune” process leads to
chronic i nflammation and tissue breakdown causing ulcerations within the intestine. Common symptoms
of Crohn’s disease include abdominal pain and cramping, diarrhea, unintentional weight loss and fatigue.
Adequate treatment of Crohn’s disease should not only relieve the symptoms, but should also control the
inflammation, so that mucosal healing can begin within the digestive tract. REMICADE (given by IV infusion)
works by neutralizing the TNF-alpha, which may relieve the symptoms of Crohn’s in patients who have not
responded to conventional therapy.
Since 1998, more than 277,000 patients have received REMICADE for Crohn’s disease or Rheumatoid
Arthritis. Remicade was recently approved for the treatment of Ulcerative Colitis and Ankylosing Spondylitis.
Although results may vary between patients, REMICADE can induce and maintain clinical remission in patients
with moderate to severe Crohn’s disease.
It is important for you to discuss any questions about REMICADE with your gastroenterologist.
