                                      Breath Testing

When bacteria in the digestive tract break down carbohydrates, they produce acids, water, and gases.  These gases can be analyzed to study intestinal absorption.  An inability to metabolize lactose, sucrose, or fructose can therefore be diagnosed by this simple “breathing test.”

Due to the acidic environment of the stomach, normally there is a low bacterial count in the duodenum and the jejunum of the small bowel.  Certain conditions can permit bacteria to increase to a level known as “Bacterial Overgrowth”.  This condition can also be diagnosed by a breath test.

Bacterial Overgrowth and Lactose Intolerance can be tested by using a kit that can be taken home.  Intolerance of fructose and other less common sugars have to be tested here in our clinic.  Also, if a kit has been submitted that has unacceptable results, an “in-house” repeat test will be scheduled.

Preparation for the Breath Tests are the same whether you use the “take-home kit” or do a test “in-house”.   On the day before the test, do not eat high fiber or slowly-digesting foods.  Foods to avoid include:  bran, coarse breads, nuts, beans, and similar vegetables; and starches except for rice.   You may have milk but should avoid cheeses.  Suggestions might be:  WHITE bread, chicken, tuna, chicken & rice.

You must not eat for at least 12 hours before beginning the test.  What you eat may interfere with the test, so it is important that for at least 12 hours before the test, you eat no food and have only water to drink.

Do not sleep or exercise vigorously for at least ½ hour to one hour before, or at any time during the test.  Do not smoke for at least ¾ hour prior to or during the test.  Specimens should not be collected in a smoke-filled room.  If you have taken antibiotics, specimens should not be collected less than 10 days after antibiotic treatment.

If you are currently taking laxatives, antacids, Metamucil, Citrucel or similar compounds, please discontinue for at least one day prior to and during the test.

If you have any questions about Breath Testing, please call the Research Department at 402-465-8888, extension 4600.
