General Instructions:
A colonoscopy requires that the entire colon be cleaned. Be sure to take the entire preparation. If your colon is not clean enough, it may be necessary you repeat the procedure at a later date.
Clear liquid diet all day prior to your procedure. No solid food of any kind is allowed. A clear liquid diet consists of any liquid you can see through, such as apple juice, clear broth, cranberry juice, white grape juice, black coffee, tea, 7-Up, Jell-O (not red or blue). Nothing with red or blue artificial food coloring. No milk, milk products, or orange juice is allowed.
You may brush your teeth the morning of the procedure, it is ok to swallow a small amount of water.
If you need to take any medications, you may take them with small sips of water.
You may have clear liquids dependent on your physician's orders. The orders will indicate the time frame that you may not have liquids or food prior to your procedure. If you have questions on those orders, please call the office at 402-465-4545.
YOU WILL NEED A DRIVER TO TAKE YOU HOME. A responsible friend or family member must accompany you home.
If you are on a blood thinning medication such as warfarin (Coumadin), heparin, lovenox, or aspirin be sure to call (402) 465-4545 and ask the nurse whether you should continue to take the medicine before your procedure!
This is VERY IMPORTANT!! You should check even if you take as little as 1 baby aspirin per day. You should generally not take aspirin for 5-7 days, or certain arthritis medications related to aspirin, such as Celebrex, Vioxx, ibuprofen
(Advil, Motrin, Nuprin), naproxen (Aleve), or ketoprofen (Orudis) for 3-5 days prior to your procedure. The nurse will give you more specific instructions when he/she speaks with you.
If you are diabetic, be sure to let the nurse know when he/she speaks to you. The nurse will have specific instructions regarding your diabetic medications. If you take other medication regularly, the nurse will give you instructions regarding what you should take before the exam. Generally, you should continue to take blood pressure medicine, heart medicine, lung (breathing) medicine, seizure medicine, and antacid (ulcer) medicine as you usually do.
MoviPrep
This prep requires a prescription. The MoviPrep contains 4 pouches and a disposable container for mixing. Mix solution can be made ahead of time and refrigerated. Solution should be used within 24 hours.
THE DAY BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE: CLEAR LIQUID DIET ONLY, NO SOLID FOODS
At 5:00 PM Empty 1 Pouch A and 1 Pouch B into the disposable container. Add lukewarm drinking water to the top line of the container. Mix to dissolve.
The MoviPrep container is divided by 4 marks. Every 20 minutes drink the solution down to the next mark (approx. 8 ounces), until the full liter is complete. Drink 16 ounces of clear liquid of your choice.
At 8:00 pm Repeat steps 1 and 2.
